Who's Who in Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon England (Who's Who in British History S.)

Who's Who in Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon England is more than a work of reference: it is a book to read and enjoy. It is the first volume in the eight volume Who's Who in British History series which extends from Roman to Victorian times. Each volume is a portrait of an age, featuring the men and women who played a prominent part in their time. Presenting history in a biographical form, it complements the conventional approach.
Drawing on the recent discoveries of archaeologists and other researchers, the author of this volume has prepared over 140 short biographies which convey more than the bare facts of his subjects' lives: he places them in the context of their time and evokes what was distinctive and interesting in their personality and achievement.
The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily turn from one contemporary to the next. The student (of whatever age) will find the index with its numerous cross-references a useful guide to finding the information he seeks.
The other volumes, each with a different author, cover the Early Medieval, Late Medieval, Tudor, Stuart, Early Hanoverian, Late Hanoverian and Victorian periods. The series editor is Geoffrey Treasure.
RICHARD FLETCHER read history at Oxford and is now Senior Lecturer in History at the University of York. He contributes articles and reviews to learned journals and has written two books.
